The Sipland Guide to Charleston

Bar Rollins

Local artists, designers, bar and restaurant professionals, and other creative types convene in this easy-going East Side wine bar that serves an array of natural-leaning bottles and Mediterranean snacks with zero pretense. Few wine bars have dedicated n/a options that go beyond the cursory soda or seltzer, but Bar Rollins makes everyone feel welcome.

Sip elegant glasses of n/a aperitif Figlia garnished with juicy orange slices, or Lovely Bunch’s tart sparkling apple juice.

Melfi’s

From the Leon’s and Little Jack’s team comes this Italian-accented destination for salads, pastas, Roman-style thin-crust pizzas, and more. The clubby space has tufted banquettes, exposed brick walls, and mod pendant lamps above a handsome wood bar.

Sample n/a cocktails like the Laid Back Margarita, made with Ritual spirit-free tequila and spicy bitters, or The Good Sun, which combines Ritual spirit-free tequila with pineapple juice, bitters, and crisp ginger.

Herd Provisions

This sprawling Wagener Terrace space includes a bar, butcher’s counter, dining room, and buzzy backyard patio. Farmer-proprietor Alec Bradford’s transparent sourcing methods and whole-animal butcher are nearly as renowned as Herd Provisions’ daily happy hour, which features small plates, burgers, and drink specials.

Try bubbly cannabis beverages like Levity (THC, CBD, mint, lemon, and club soda) and High Rise (Delta 9 THC, CBD, and blood orange seltzer) or a seasonal shrub made with macerated strawberries, basil, and Champagne vinegar. Or customize a lemonade or limeade with a splash of rose-cardamom, Thai basil, or lavender-juniper syrup.

Last Saint

Reserve a spot in the intimate cocktail den located behind a neighborhood bar in this hip, dual-concept space. Its cozy booths and lime-hued vintage bar host local deejays and other events, and provide a welcome respite from the King Street throngs.

Menus are unnecessary. Tell the talented bartenders what sorts of flavors or styles of beverages you like—bubbly citrus-forward drinks, for example, or stirred herbal sippers— and enjoy a custom creation tailored to your specifications.

Don your sunnies to hit this coastal-chic pool bar and cafe in downtown’s Ryder Hotel. The indoor-outdoor space has twinkling string lights, comfy lounge chairs, and a thatched-roof bar pouring macchiatos in the morning and cocktails from 10 a.m. on.

We’re partial to the Shallow End, a refreshing long drink made with Seedlip Garden, strawberry, lime, and seltzer; or the aptly named School Night, which combines n/a dry Riesling, mulled hibiscus tea, and tart citrus cordial.
