St. Agrestis Phony Negroni

TLDR:  Chicly packaged nonalcoholic cocktail with a bitter bite.

Accept no substitutions for this bottled or canned nonalcoholic cocktail whose invitingly bitter flavors have legions of fans. Since the Phony Negroni made its 2022 debut, it’s become a mainstay on award-winning bar programs, Michelin-starred restaurant menus, and in the hands of people who do and don’t drink alcohol. While cocktail purists may note that traditional Negronis aren’t carbonated, the Phony Negroni’s bubbly bite gives it the heft of a spirited concoction—and none of the booze.

HOW TO SERVE

Pour ¼-cup of fresh-squeezed orange juice (about one large navel orange) into an ice-filled Collins glass, top with the Phony Negroni, and stir gently to combine. Garnish with an orange wedge.

Phony Negroni Granita

Bring ½-cup each of sugar and water to a boil on the stovetop then reduce to a simmer, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat, pour into an 8-x-8-inch baking dish, then stir in two Phony Negronis. Freeze the mixture for 3 hours, taking it out every 30 minutes and raking a fork across the surface to shred. Serve the granita in chilled coupes or small glass bowls.

Sip the Phony Negroni straight from the bottle or pour over a large ice cube in a chilled rocks glass and garnish with an orange twist.

MEET THE MAKER

St. Agresti

In 2014, brothers Louis and Matt Catizone partnered with longtime friend Steven DeAngelo to create an amaro-centric distillery, St. Agrestis, in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood. The company’s range includes alcoholic amaros and spritzes as well as an array of nonalcoholic options, including the Phony Negroni, nonalcoholic mezcal- and espresso-spiked Phony Negroni, the aperitivo-style Amaro Falso, and nonalcoholic-amaro-soaked cherries. All are chicly packaged and poured in high-end restaurants, bars, or devastatingly cool house parties near you.
